Leadership Skills for Supervisors

ULI-large2forlinkedin.fwThe Leadership Skills for Supervisors training series is intended to enhance basic leadership skills in supervisors at all levels of state government. The program is composed of four separate day-long courses covering: communications; interpersonal relations; performance management; and leadership.

There is no requirement to sign-up for and complete all of the courses; rather the courses are offered separately, and participants can choose the course or courses they want to attend, as well as the sequence of courses. Below you will find a brief description of each course and the topics covered.


Performance Management

In this session supervisors will learn fundamental communication principles and skills that will enable them to lead more effectively. Participants will learn how to communicate more assertively, listen more intently, and how to become more aware of the communication mixed messages they may be sending. Topics include:

  • Non-Verbal Communication
  • Assertive Communication
  • Active Listening
  • Information Sharing/Mediums
  • Diplomatic Communication
  • Communication and Leadership


In this workshop, attendees will learn to be successful leaders by helping their employees and organizations accomplish tangible results through goal setting, feedback, coaching, and accountability. This workshop is critical because tangible results are the most practical aim of all leadership activities. Topics include:

  • Goal Setting Theory
  • Feedback
  • Coaching
  • Performance Evaluations
  • Rewards/Recognition
  • Job Characteristics Model
  • Performance planning

Interpersonal Effectiveness


In this session supervisors will learn why interpersonal effectiveness is so critical in developing and maintaining professional relationships that allow organizations to flourish. Also, participants will learn how to develop emotional competencies that allow them to maintain credibility as leaders and to manage conflict so as to produce the best possible results for their teams.Topics include:

  • Personality/MBTI
  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Empathy/Observation
  • Social Skills
  • Conflict Resolution
In this session supervisors will learn enduring leadership principles that will assist them in guiding their employees and teams to higher levels of effectiveness and job satisfaction. Specifically, supervisors will discuss why they play the critical role in establishing leadership in their agencies and learn how to identify their values and how to create meaning and cohesion in their work units.Topics include:

  • Why does one want to lead
  • Why a leader’s work is important
  • How to create a good climate to work in
  • How leaders build trust
  • How leaders inspire others

Registration for “public” courses is completed through HRE Venture, the state’s training records management system. A tfifteen dollar participant fee is charged for public courses to offset the costs of course materials.
